So you went too heavy in the gym, and now you need to ice. Here is a trick from my physical therapist, the genius Mike Yamashita, designed to making icing easy: use dixie cups! Fill a dozen or so dixie cups with water and freeze overnight. It helps to “double cup” these babies to keep the ice blocks from tearing out the bottoms out of the paper cups as they freeze. When you need to ice, remove a block from the freezer and tear away the top inch of the dixie cup all the way around. Hold the ice block at its bottom, where the paper cup remains in place, and ice away. Each ice block lasts about 20 minutes, which is the perfect amount of time to ice according to personal training instructor, Nate the Great. As an added bonus, holding on to the paper cup at the bottom of the ice block keeps your fingers from freezing. Icing made easy. Check out my photo of dixie ice blocks below. Neato!
